Second Recipient of the Frank Laumer Legacy Award: Billy L. Cypress (1942-2004)

If you were with us in St. Augustine two years ago, you’ll remember Frank Laumer being given the very first Frank Laumer Legacy Award.

This year, at the 2019 Convocation of Seminole War Historians in Okeechobee, Fla., the Seminole Wars Foundation named Billy Cypress (1942-2004) the second recipient of the award.

Cypress was the first Florida Seminole to earn a college degree; he was an Army major and combat platoon leader; he was the first director of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum; and he was a contributing author to many books about Native Americans.

We thank Billy Cypress for his contribution to historic preservation, and we are so grateful that his wife, Carol Cypress, and his family, were able to attend to accept this award on his behalf.
